There are downsides to everything, but this one single pro sold me on magnetic cabinet locks early, and I’ve never looked back. My kitchen cabinets still look like they did before I had kids. Winning!

Benefits of Magnetic Cabinet Locks
Magnetic cabinet locks are great solutions for your baby. They’re hidden, they’re secure, and they’re easy to install. If you put the key up high, your child won’t be able to open them. Often, a child will quickly learn how child proof cabinet lock systems work, but not this time.
Out of sight
The absolute worst thing about child proofing systems is that they’re ugly. I have always hated the look of stark white plastic dangling off of my cabinets all over the house. They have a lot of flimsy parts that are hard to operate, even for an adult.
Not to mention, my kids always saw them as attractive new toys to play with and would have them figured out in less than a day. In less than a week, they’d be a giant, broken waste of money.
By the time I had baby #3, I finally figured out that magnetic cabinet locks were a thing, and from then on, they were my go-to solution.
The kids can’t see them, so they can’t play with them. They’re also not ugly. Well, maybe some are, but again, you can’t see them, so that matters less to me now.
Security and safety
When it comes to keeping the cabinets locked and secure, magnetic cabinet locks are simply the best. The hardware is more durable than other solutions, so I only had to install them once, and they’ve lasted for six years so far.
My kids are safe from whatever is inside the cabinet, and better yet, my dishes are safe from little fingers that like to break them.
Versatility
Are you ready for this one? You can use magnetic child safe cabinet locks on your cabinets…and your drawers! That’s right. You don’t need a different solution for every type of storage. You can buy these bad boys in bulk and install them anywhere.
You can also switch most of these solutions on and off. As the kids get older, you don’t have to uninstall them. Just make sure you have the switch turned to the ‘unlock’ position, and you won’t need the key.
Your system is still properly installed for the next baby who comes along, whether that’s yours, a friend’s, or your first grandchild.
What to Look For in Magnetic Cabinet Locks
There are several things that all the best magnetic cabinet locks have in common. If you are in desperate need of a child proofing solution for the kitchen, bathroom, bookcase, or any other cabinets, you should look for the following things first.
Ease of use
Number one in my book is how easy they are to use. Using the key to get them unlocked should be a huge hassle, and switching them from the lock to the unlock position should be easy enough for you to do.
I will say that there is one downside to ease of use. If they’re easy to switch on and off, the occasional bump will leave you searching high and low for a key you haven’t used in a while because you thought all of the cabinets were unlocked. I ran into this issue when my kids got older and I didn’t need to engage the locks anymore.
However, this doesn’t happen very often, and knowing what I know now, I still would use magnetic cabinet locks over anything else if I had it to do all over again.
Installation
Installation comes second, only because I like to ensure that my cabinet locks are secure, no matter what it takes to get them set up. It may mean I have to screw some hardware into the back of my cabinet doors, but nobody will see it and the screw holes are typically pretty small.
However, it’s important to consider installation, because if you don’t own a screwdriver, you’ll either have to buy one or choose something else.
Adhesive is much easier to install and takes a lot less time. If you decide to go this route, make sure you’re using really strong adhesive tape. A child may not be able to open it if you use weak tape, but an adult can.
All it takes is one quick pull when you forget that the doors are locked to peel the adhesive off. But don’t worry too much about it until after you get them installed. If you find that the tape they came with isn’t strong enough, simply replace it with stronger 3M tape from your local shop.
Adhesive also breaks down and wears out over time, but it’s not likely that will happen before your child grows out of needing child locks. It depends on how many children you have and how long you’re in that phase of life.
Security
This has a lot to do with installation. If you install your magnetic cabinet locks correctly, they’ll be pretty secure. However, consider the material they’re made of and how sturdy they feel in your hand.
The most durable magnetic cabinet locks are pretty hefty. They’re solid and they have a nice quality feel. And again, weak adhesive likely won’t cut it, so even if you don’t want to drill, make sure you have tape strong enough to secure your locks in place.
Size of the magnet
Magnetic cabinet locks come with a pretty strong magnet that you, as the adult, use to unlock the cabinets. The magnet temporarily disengages the interior lock from the outside of the cabinet, allowing you to open the door.
These magnets have to be pretty strong or they won’t work through certain materials like really thick wood cabinets. However, some aren’t as big as others. I prefer the bigger ones, and here’s why.
I can’t tell you how many of them I’ve had to replace. They get lost and I get locked out of my cabinets…FOR-E-VER.
Or my kid gets a hold of it and thinks it’s a toy. Which, coincidentally, is safer if the magnet isn’t small enough to swallow. Win/win.
Let’s face it, as a parent, you’re going to have scatterbrain moments where you either forget where you put the magnet or you forget to put it up high enough to be out of a kid’s reach. In these cases, I like the bigger size because it’s less likely to get lost in the shuffle.
If you’re of the opinion that you’d rather have a smaller, less unsightly magnet key, those exist. In this case, diligence is super important.
Price
Budget constraints are real. Magnetic cabinet locks are more expensive than most other types. It’s worth the investment, but if it’s not in your budget, you’ll want to factor that in.
It also depends on how many you need. Many sets come with 4, 6, or 8 locks and one key. Smaller sets are cheaper, but larger sets are a better value.
Looks
There will always be people who care what it looks like, even though it’s not visible. This is pretty low on my totem pole, but if looks do matter, then make sure you factor this into your decision.
There are a few different styles to choose from, so hopefully you’ll find something you like.
My Magnetic Cabinet Lock Reviews
There are a lot of options out there, but some of the best I’ve found are listed below. They’re the most durable, most affordable solutions, but they all have unique features that are worth noting.
Safety 1st Magnetic Locking System
My top choice is the Safety 1st magnetic locking system. Safety 1st is a huge name in all kinds of baby products and I really like the quality of their offering. I’ve had Safety 1st products since my nine year old was born, and they’ve held up through three more kids after her.
I installed this system on my cabinets four years ago when my five year old started showing an interest in getting into things, and they’re still there. It took me 45 minutes or so to install a set of eight and get them working properly.
These locks are really strong and durable. They also fit on both doors and drawers, so you can secure anything with a single purchase. They come in packs of eight locks and one key, so if you have a lot of cabinets, they’re an excellent solution.
Safety 1st performed both home testing and mechanical pull force testing to ensure that no amount of human strength could open these bad boys when they were locked. As long as they’re correctly aligned and installed, they’ll be more secure than any other solution.
They have a bit of a boxy design, but it’s a lot more attractive than other systems, and the locking mechanism is smooth. It clicks softly into place and operates seamlessly whether you’re using the key or switching it to the unlock position manually.
The key that comes with them is pretty large, so it’s hard to misplace. However, you can order replacement keys rather easily if you do happen to lose it.
You can switch the lock on or off and keep it that way, so if you have cabinets you no longer need to restrict access to or your kids grow out of this phase, you don’t have to uninstall them.
Pros
- Made from the strongest materials for more security
- Large key magnet that’s hard to misplace
- Replacement parts are easy to find
- Unlock mode keeps your cabinets accessible when you need it
Cons
- Takes longer to install than some others
- Pricier than other solutions
Safety 1st Adhesive Magnetic System
I would rank this set the best adhesive magnetic system. I love the Safety 1st brand. It’s almost a shame that these are hidden because they’re so aesthetically pleasing. The rounded shape makes them attractive, and when you’re the one who knows they’re there, it’s nice to know you’re getting a good quality item, even if no one can see it.
The egg-shaped magnet is sleek and nice to look at. It’s an adhesive set, but it also comes with screws in case you find that you need to mount them more securely. This offers more versatility than other systems.
The locking mechanism features smooth operation and it’s easy to switch it to the unlock position manually if you don’t want your cabinets to lock.
The lip on the catch is large enough to stop the lock when it’s engaged, but it’s not in the way when you want it to be accessible.
It comes with a template for aligning the lock with the catch so you install it correctly the first time. The instructions are super easy to follow and installation takes just minutes.
Strong 3M tape ensures that your locks stay put for as long as you need. It also comes with screws, just in case the adhesive doesn’t work on your cabinet material. It’s nice to have options.
This set is available in two locks, four locks, or eight locks, and extra keys are plentiful.
Pros
- Made by the reputable Safety 1st brand
- Comes with adhesive and screws for easy mounting no matter what
- Sleek design
Cons
- One of the more expensive solutions available
Eco Baby Magnetic Cabinet and Drawer Locks
The Eco Baby magnetic cabinet and drawer locks come in the most comprehensive set I’ve seen. It has everything you need to lock pretty much everything. With 12 locks and two keys, you can put them on either cabinets or drawers and keep a spare key for emergencies.
These keys are a bit on the small side, so I would worry about choking, but they also come with key holders to reduce your risk of misplacing these valuable items. As long as you keep them up high, you won’t have to worry.
I love that this set also comes with alcohol swabs to clean your surfaces before installing the locks. They’re adhesive, so it’s important that you install them on a clean surface for maximum adhesion.
It comes with 3M tape, so the adhesion is stronger than other adhesive options.
Installation is easy because it comes with a ruler that you can use to measure, an installation cradle that helps you position the locks appropriately, and a comprehensive installation video that will teach you how to do it right the first time.
As if that wasn’t enough, there are also 12 lock location stickers so you can mark the appropriate spot before securing the locks, that way you don’t do it wrong. You can also switch the locks off when you need to so you have easy access to all of your items when the baby isn’t around.
Pros
- No drilling for easy installation
- Uses strong 3M adhesive tape
- Comes with all the installation tools you’ll need
- Works on cabinets and drawers
Cons
- They have to cure for 24 hours, so you can’t use them right away
- Small key design may be easy to lose
Safety Magnetic Cabinet Locks
You may have already noticed that these cabinet locks have an almost identical design to the Eco Baby option above. This set comes with thorough installation instructions and all the tools you need to get them set up.
They’re another adhesive solution that makes installation really quick and easy, so you don’t have to mess with drilling into your cabinets. The locks are on the small size, but strong enough to work through thick cabinet doors.
You can also install these on both cabinets and doors, so you can secure nearly anything and keep your child safe.
The primary difference here is that this set comes with 16 locks, 3 keys, and 3 key holders, so it’s quite a bit bigger than a lot of other sets, and it comes at a shockingly affordable price. If you need to secure a lot of cabinets, you can likely get it all done with this one set.
This huge set isn’t made by any well-known manufacturer, so if that makes you uncomfortable, it might not be the set for you. However, they can also keep the price low due to a lack of advertising, so you’re likely getting comparable quality.
The only thing I would caution you about with a set like this is that they don’t specify what kind of adhesive they’re including, so you may not be getting 3M quality tape. It could wear out more quickly and need replacing sooner.
Pros
- Huge set with a lot of pieces for large spaces
- Affordable price
- Easy adhesive set up
- All of the tools you need to install are included
Cons
- Not a well-known brand
- Not 3M quality tape
- Magnet key is small and could be a choking hazard
Vmaisi Baby Proofing Magnetic Cabinet Locks
Vmaisi Safety is a company that manufactures all types of baby safety items including baby gates, child proofing solutions, and more. They’ve been around for over ten years and manufacture quality products at an affordable price.
You’ll likely find that these products fall in a mid-range when it comes to price. They’re not the cheapest but they’re also not as expensive as some of the bigger brands you see more often.
This set also comes with 12 locks, but only one key. I generally like to see a set come with more than one key, no matter how many locks they provide, simply to save me in case I lose the first one. Luckily, replacement keys are always available.
They are made of sturdy and durable materials to ensure premium safety for your child, but it’s unclear what kind of adhesive they come with. It doesn’t seem to be 3M quality, so you may run into issues of longevity.
It also comes with a key holder and everything you need to line them up and install them accurately. It lacks stickers that you can use to mark your lock spot, but you can always use a pencil or a pen.
And of course, you’ll enjoy the unlocking feature that allows you access to your cabinet with ease when you don’t want to keep them secure.
The most unique thing about this set is that it also comes with screws if you decide you’d rather secure the locks that way rather than using the adhesive. It’s a nice option to have in case you ever change your mind or the adhesive doesn’t work as well as you were hoping.
Pros
- Comes with adhesive and screws
- All installation materials included
- Key holder makes it easy to keep track
- Permanent unlocking feature
Cons
- Only comes with one key
- Small key size could be a choking hazard
Invisible Magnetic Cabinet Locks
These magnetic locks fit on doors and drawers, so you can place them on anything you need to keep locked. It comes with eight locks and two keys. It also comes with two key bases and all of the adhesive strips you need.
These adhesive strips are branded by 3M, so you can count on their quality. Unfortunately, the set does not come with a ruler or an installation cradle. However, there is a comprehensive instructional video teaching you how to install them, and with adhesive, it’s easy because of the adhesive.
As an added bonus, this set also comes with four outlet covers and four table corner protectors for added safety around the house.
This set is on the expensive end and it’s not worth it if you don’t need the outlet covers or corner protectors, simply because you don’t get the installation supplies, it doesn’t come with screws in case you change your mind, and you only get eight locks.
However, if you find that you need a bigger size, there is a set of 16 locks, three keys, and eight outlet covers. It’s a pretty pricey set for what you get. It doesn’t come with table corner protectors at all.
Each lock can be left unlocked to provide easy access to cabinets as needed. The key is on the small size, so added caution is always advised to make sure you keep it out of reach.
Pros
- Outlet covers and table corner protectors included
- 3M quality adhesive
- Comes in a set of 8 or 16
Cons
- Pricey
- Small key could be a choking hazard
Jambini Magnetic Cabinet Locks
This adhesive set comes with only four locks and one key, which is great for small rooms without a lot of cabinets. This is the best small, affordable set and also comes with all the 3M adhesive you need to get it installed quickly.
You don’t need to drill into your cabinets and the strong lock will work through up to two inches of thick wood. Be mindful of the small key size once again and keep it out of reach.
The only problem with the design of this set is that you have to take great care to align them just right. Many sets have catches that are wide enough to give you some room for error, but these aren’t very big at all.
The low profile is nice if you don’t have a lot of room to work, but can make it difficult to line up or install properly.
I still wish even sets this small would come with another key, but replacements are available and easy to find. You’re also missing a key base with this set, but it’s almost easier to throw the key up on the refrigerator among your other magnets to keep it safe and handy.
A flip switch disengages the lock so you can keep them open and accessible when needed.
Pros
- Set of 4 is perfect for small spaces
- No need to drill
- Quality 3M adhesive
- Comes with a switch to disengage lock when needed
Cons
- Only comes with one key
- Can be hard to line up and install
Magnetic Child Safety Cabinet Locks
This set definitely falls at the lower end of the spectrum when it comes to price and it comes with 12 locks and three keys. It’s the best option for large rooms on a budget or for spreading throughout the entire house.
The keys are small, but cute, with little inset dots on the top. The problem is, they look fun. Definitely make sure you keep these out of reach because they’re too good not to play with.
They fit on doors and drawers, so install them wherever they’re convenient. An easy-to-follow installation video is included so you can be sure you do it right. They adhere to your cabinets with adhesive so there’s no messy drilling or installation.
The adhesive isn’t as strong as it could be, and a hard pull could send your cabinet door swinging and locks flying. These locks are best used in households where the children aren’t very strong or curious. The well-timed tug of a determined child could mean the end of safety.
The locking mechanism works well when it’s locked and you can disengage the lock if you don’t need to use it.
Pros
- Adhesive for easy installation
- Comes with three keys
- Inexpensive
Cons
- Adhesive is not very strong
- Keys are a small choking hazard
Eco Baby Magnetic Cabinet Locks
This set of six locks comes with two keys. Finally, a small set that comes with two keys, just like I think every set should, no matter the size. You’ll mitigate any risk of accidentally losing your key or locking it in a cabinet. Been there, done that. I had to go buy another key that day so that I could get into all of my cabinets to make dinner.
The strong 3M tape ensures that your cabinet locks stay strong in the face of a persistent child. They’re easy to install without drilling and they have a switch to disengage the lock when you don’t need it.
The striker plate is wide, making it even easier to install without worrying too much about lining it up accurately. I love it when there’s wiggle room, because I’m a measure-once-do-it-once type of person.
The installation cradle is a God send, meaning you really don’t have to measure and then measure again. It will go in right the first time and you’ll be done.
These second generation upgraded magnets are a lot stronger than previous Eco Baby products so they’re more effective at keeping everyone out.
This isn’t the cheapest solution, but it’s also not the most expensive. It’s a good middle of the road compromise when it comes to needing good quality at a good price. You won’t overpay, but you won’t get the most attractive design either.
Any way you slice it, this set probably offers the best value because of its size (two keys!!!), easy installation, and pricing.
Pros
- Excellent value
- Strong adhesive for secure function
- Wide striker plate and cradle for easy installation
Cons
- Keys could be a choking hazard
Skyla’s Baby Proofing Magnetic Cabinet Locks
These locks are certified by the US Consumer Product Safety Commision. That may give you a bit more confidence that they will work well. Surprisingly, you won’t pay too much more for a set of 12 than with other uncertified options.
The design seems more functional and easier to install than others. While it’s not the most attractive, the striker plate is solid and the lip catches the lock nicely. Given that they’ll be inside the cabinets, I’d rather have a design that works well.
The installation stencil allows you to mark the spot where your locks need to go and then adhere them once without doing it incorrectly. It also comes with target stickers you can put on the outside of the cabinet doors so you always know precisely where to aim the lock.
The stickers may be an eyesore for some people and it seems backwards to put stickers on the cabinet when a lot of parents choose magnetic locks for the purpose of keeping it all hidden.
Nonetheless, they’re there if you need them, and it’s still better than fiddling with the cheap plastic solutions that go on the outside.
Ordering from Skyla is nice because they stand behind their products. If you’re not 100% satisfied for any reason, you’ll get a refund. You can even keep the product. They don’t ask for a return. They just want you to be happy.
Pros
- 100% satisfaction guarantee
- Certified by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission
- Easy to install with a stencil
Cons
- Target stickers seem pointless
The Verdict
The Safety 1st Magnetic Locking System is the best in my opinion in terms of style, price, features, and function. Installation takes a bit longer because it needs to be mounted to your cabinets with screws, but it’s well worth the extra time for the security you get.
It only comes with one magnet, but replacements are easy to come by. It’s durable and long lasting, so you’ll never have to replace them. The price is just right and you can count on quality from a well-known brand in the industry.
