Who Needs A Double Stroller?
The answer to this question might seem a bit obvious. However, there are a few things to consider. If you’re going to have twins, chances are you are going to need a double stroller.
On the other hand if you have two young children that are a couple of years apart, you may or may not need a double. You might be able to get by pushing your older child in a stroller while carrying your little one in a baby carrier. Or, you might be able to convince your older child to walk or ride on a riding board that trails behind the stroller. Then again, it might be easiest to push them both in one stroller.
That said, the double stroller that you need for pushing two newborns around is quite different than the one that you need to push two kids around that are different ages.
Cristin’s Note: Our kids are two years apart. I think in most situations, we would have been fine with two single strollers, or with a single stroller and a baby carrier. Having said that, on those trips to the zoo, or other days where we were walking for hours, a double stroller was the far better option.
What To Consider When Shopping For A Double Stroller
There are a few choices you need to make upfront about what type of double stroller you want. Then, once you know what type you want, there are some things to keep in mind when shopping.
Tandem Or Side By Side
With a tandem stroller, one child sits behind the other. With a side by side, your little passengers will be right next to each other.
The big advantage with a tandem is that they are much narrower than side by side strollers. So, you’ll never have trouble getting through a doorway or on a crowded sidewalk. The disadvantage with a tandem with that they tend to be harder to maneuver because of their length. In some cases, one of the seats is much more desirable than the other. Maybe one has a better view, cup holders, or reclines further. In these cases, older toddlers may throw a tantrum over who gets to sit in which seat.
Side by side strollers are much wider, and in some cases it can be tough to get them through the door. But, they do tend to maneuver better than tandems.
How Will You Use The Stroller?
There are all different types of double strollers. Some are great for jogging or going off road, others are great for every day use.
Car Seat Compatible?
If you have newborn twins, you might want to look at a travel system or a stroller that’s car seat compatible. If you have toddlers, you won’t need car seat compatibility. If you have an infant and a toddler, you might go either way. This is definitely something to consider though when making your purchase.
How Heavy Is It?
Double strollers tend to be a lot heavier than single strollers. So, this is something to consider when you’re shopping. Lifting 5 or 10 extra pounds every time you want to put the stroller into the trunk can get old after a while.
How Wide Is It?
This is something to pay close attention to if you’re buying a side by side stroller. If you get one that is too wide and bulky, it will be tough to fit through some doorways. This issue isn’t quite as bad with double strollers as it is with triple strollers, but it’s still something to look at.
Storage And Cup Holders
With all of the things that you need to carry around with two kids, storage space is pretty important. Look for parent and child cup holders as well. These are a nice features, especially as your kids get a little older.
My Top Double Stroller Reviews
I have looked at the wide world of double strollers, and selected the best in class within different stroller types. There are strollers below that are car seat compatible and others that aren’t. There are options that are great for jogging or going off road, and others that are better for every day use. Any of the strollers included below would be a great choice. It’s really a matter of picking the right one for you.
Joovy Scooter X2 Double Stroller
Joovy’s Scooter X2 Double Stroller offers several nice features, with a few fairly minor drawbacks. It’s affordably priced to boot.
One concern that parents often have wide side-by-side strollers is that they will be difficult to fit through doorways. While that concern is justified with many strollers, this one is actually quite narrow for a side-by-side at only 30 inches in width.
It has plenty of storage space for parents and kids alike. There is a large storage basket underneath as well as two zippered pockets in back for phones, keys and other small items. It comes with two parent cup holders, so you and your spouse should be well hydrated (or well caffeinated!). There are also mesh pockets for your little passengers to store drinks, snacks and toys.
You can fold this one with one hand fairly easily. However, when you go to put it in your trunk, you will notice it’s a little on the heavy side. It’s also not able to stand when folded. While that might not sound like a big deal, it can actually be a really nice space saving feature.
The canopy is quite large, and provides good coverage from the sun. However, it is just a single canopy instead of two separate ones. So, you don’t have the ability to have one child in the sun and one in the shade. This isn’t too big of a deal, but worth mentioning.
In general, your little passengers should be comfortable. The seats recline independently. So, one child can be napping while the other is sitting upright. The footrests can also be adjusted separately. This is a great feature if your kids are different ages, since it means it is likely to fit both of them well. Even if your kids are the same age, this is nice since it means the stroller will continue to fit your little passengers well as they grow.
If you are looking for a stroller that is compatible with car seats, you will need to look at other options. This one is not car seat compatible.
Pros
- On the affordable end of the range
- Narrow for a side-by-side stroller
- One handed fold
- Huge storage basket underneath
- Huge canopy
- Two cup holders for parents
- Two zippered pockets in back for small items
- Mesh pockets for kids to store drinks, snacks and toys
- Seats and footrests recline independently
Cons
- Fairly heavy
- Not able to stand when folded
- Not car seat compatible
- Has one large canopy instead of two separate ones
ZOE XL2 BEST V2
The ZOE XL2 BEST v2 is an impressive side-by-side stroller. In fact, it’s my favorite double stroller for parents that don’t need a car seat compatible stroller. It also happens to be quite affordably priced.
The first thing that you will notice about this one is that it’s remarkably light. That’s a really big deal, since most double strollers are on the heavy side. Believe me, this is something you will appreciate when you’re putting it into the trunk for the 100th time.
What’s more impressive is that it’s still quite sturdy since it’s well built. It also handles quite well. So, you can make tights turns whenever you like.
Folding this one up is a breeze and can be done one handed. It’s also able to stand when folded, which is really helpful whenever space is tight. If you’re going out for a bite to eat, it’s really nice to be able to fold your stroller and store it right beside you, instead of trying to find a place to lay it down.
Your kids should be comfortable riding around. The seats recline independently. So, one child can lay back while the other sits upright. Some parents do note that they wish it reclined a bit further though. Each child has their own deluxe canopy, so one can be in the shade while the other gets a little more sun if desired. From a practical perspective, I wouldn’t imagine using this feature too often, but it’s nice to have the option I suppose.
The storage basket underneath is fairly large. However, this one does not have a parent console. So, there is no really convenient place to put your phone. It does come with one parent cup holder, two child cup holders, and a child snack cup.
This one is not car seat compatible. So, if that is an important feature to you, take a look at some of the other options below.
Pros
- Affordably priced
- Remarkably light weight
- Includes a child snack cup and two child cup holders
- Includes one parent cup holder
- Separate deluxe canopies for each child
- One handed fold
- Stands when folded
- Large underneath storage basket
- Seats recline independently
- Maneuvers well
Cons
- Not car seat compatible
- No parent console
- Seats don’t recline as much as some parents would like
Chicco Cortina Together Double Stroller
The Chicco Cortina Together Double Stroller is compatible with Chicco’s wildly popular KeyFit and Fit2 car seats. It’s versatile though. So, you can cart both your kids around in car seats, both in stroller seats, or one in a car seat and one in a stroller seat. In my opinion, this is the best car seat compatible double stroller for most parents.
As a tandem stroller, this one is much more narrow than a side by side stroller. It’s pretty comparable in width to a single stroller. This has its advantages for navigating through doorways as well as crowded sidewalks.
It has a large zippered storage basket underneath, as well as a parent tray with space for smaller items. It also has two cup holders for parents, and two cup holders for the front seat as well. The back seat does not have a couple holder, so someone will need to pass beverages and snacks to the little passenger sitting in back.
The handlebar is adjustable. So, it’s comfortable for parents of different heights to push.
Both seats recline independently, but the front seat does not recline very far. Canopies operate independently as well. However, they are a little on the small side.
This stroller can be folded easily with one hand, and is also capable of standing when folded. Ease of folding and storing makes a big difference in how much you end up liking a stroller since you do it so often.
Like a lot of double strollers, this one is fairly heavy. So, it won’t be fun loading it into the trunk. Some parents report that it doesn’t maneuver particularly well either. This is one of the common drawbacks with tandem strollers in general.
Overall, the features on this one far outweigh the drawbacks. It’s also priced on the more affordable end of the range.
Pros
- On the affordable end of the range
- Car seat compatible with KeyFit and Fit2
- Narrow since it’s a tandem
- Independent canopies
- Adjustable handlebar
- Has a parent tray with two cup holders and storage for small items
- Two cup holders for child in front seat
- Large zippered storage basket underneath
- One handed fold
- Stands when folded
Cons
- Fairly heavy
- Some parents report it’s difficult to maneuver
- Canopies are on the small side
BOB Revolution Flex Duallie Jogging Stroller
BOB is well know for making outstanding all terrain strollers. So, it’s no surprise that they delivered a winner with the Revolution Flex Duallie Jogging Stroller. If you’re looking for an all terrain double stroller, this is the one I would recommend.
This stroller has a front wheel that can be set to swivel for increased mobility, or set to lock for stability when jogging. It handles incredibly well on any terrain. The high end suspension system and large air filled tires ensure that your little passengers will have a smooth ride no matter where you take them.
It has a hand brake that helps you to keep control if you’re going down a steep hill, or jogging at a fast pace.
This stroller is car seat compatible when you purchase a BOB Duallie infant car seat adapter. This a nice option to have if you’re planning to take your little ones off road.
The handlebar is adjustable to 9 different positions. So, parents of different heights will both be comfortable pushing it. This is also nice since you may prefer a different handlebar height when going up or down a steep hill.
Both the seats and the canopies can be reclined or adjusted independently. The canopies are quite large as well. So, your little passengers should be comfortable.
This stroller does leave something to be desired when it comes to storage. The basket beneath the stroller is a little on the small side. The stroller also doesn’t come with cup holders or a parent tray.
It’s also worth pointing out that this is a fairly expensive stroller. So, it’s great if you go off road a lot. But, if you only go an occasional hike, you might want to look at other off road options.
Pros
- Handles exceptionally well
- Hand brake helps you stay in control
- Car seat compatible with an adapter
- Air filled tires handle rugged terrains with ease
- High end suspension system provides a smooth ride
- Adjustable handlebar
- Large canopies that adjust independently
Cons
- Fairly expensive
- Doesn’t include a parent tray or cup holders
- Underneath storage space is on the small side
UPPAbaby Vista Stroller
This is a really well designed stroller that is remarkably versatile. It is capable of carrying two children in toddler seats, bassinets, car seats, or any combination. This stroller can carry a third child as well if they ride on the piggyback skateboard in back.
Beyond its versatile design, the next thing you will notice is that it’s very easy to maneuver, even with one hand. That’s quite a feat for any stroller, particularly a double stroller. Just think of how easy it will be to check your phone or take a sip of coffee when you’re strolling around town.
It’s compatible with the MESA infant car sear right out of the box. Or, you can purchase an adapter and it will be compatible with most other car seats.
The handlebar is adjustable. So, it’s comfortable to push even if parents are different heights.
The canopies are independently adjustable, and the seats recline independently as well. So, your little passengers will be traveling in comfort.
Folding and unfolding are pretty easy. So, you won’t mind taking this stroller out or putting it away.
The storage basket underneath is quite large. However, it doesn’t come with a parent console or a cup holder. So, you don’t have a convenient spot for your phone or your latte.
The biggest issue with this one though is that it’s priced at the high end of the range. If money is no object, this is a really compelling option. But, if you are on a tight budget, it’s probably a good idea to look at other strollers.
Pros
- Easy to navigate, even with one hand
- Car seat compatible
- Several riding positions
- Adjustable handlebar
- Easy to fold and unfold
- Capable of carrying three children if one stands on the piggyback skateboard
- Large canopies adjust independently
- Seats recline independently
- Large underneath storage basket
Cons
- Priced at the high end of the range
- Does not come with a cup holder or parent console
Bringing Home The Best Double Stroller
n my opinion, the Chicco Cortina Together Double Stroller is the best car seat compatible double stroller for most parents, and the ZOE XL2 BEST v2 is the best one that’s not car seat compatible.
However, all of the strollers above are solid options. Picking the best double stroller is really about picking the one that’s most suited to your needs. Some are great for every day use, and others are great for going off road. Some are expensive and some are attractively priced. It’s really all about what’s best for your situation.
